There is no honest universal “container rate” that can be calculated from a destination alone. A usable estimate starts with cargo volume, package dimensions, gross weight, origin, destination, shipping mode, Incoterm, and the services included in the quote. This guide shows how to calculate CBM, check chargeable weight, separate cost drivers, and send the inputs a forwarder needs for a current quotation.

Quick answer

  • Calculate CBM from the packed length × width × height of every package, then add the package volumes.
  • For air freight, chargeable weight is generally based on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, but the divisor is carrier- and service-specific.
  • FCL is quoted per container; LCL is usually quoted from cargo volume, weight, origin, destination, and minimum charges.
  • Use the live CBM calculator for a first volume check, then request a shipment-specific quote.

First calculate the packed cargo, not the product listing

Freight is planned from the cargo as it will be handed to the carrier. Use the final packed dimensions, number of cartons or pallets, gross weight, and any special handling information. Product dimensions alone can understate the shipment after inner packaging, export cartons, palletization, or protective materials are added.

CBM formula

When dimensions are in centimetres, calculate each package as length × width × height ÷ 1,000,000. Multiply by the number of identical packages and add the results for all package types.

Input What to record Why it matters
Package count Cartons, pallets, crates, or other handling units Volume and handling are calculated across the complete shipment
Packed dimensions Length, width, and height for each package type CBM and volumetric weight depend on the packed size
Gross weight Product plus packaging, in the requested unit Carrier limits and chargeable-weight checks use shipment weight
Stacking and handling Stackable, fragile, oversized, palletized, or dangerous status The same CBM can require different handling and equipment

For example, a shipment with 20 cartons packed at 60 × 40 × 40 cm has a total volume of 1.92 CBM: 0.096 CBM per carton × 20 cartons. That is a volume calculation only. It is not a freight price, because the route, carrier, service level, origin work, destination work, and cargo rules still need to be confirmed.

Check chargeable weight for air and other measured services

Air carriers compare actual weight with volumetric or dimensional weight. The higher figure is commonly used as chargeable weight, but the density ratio or divisor can vary by carrier, location, service, and booking. DHL Global Forwarding explains the “whichever is greater” principle and notes that density ratios vary; do not apply one universal divisor to every quote.

Use this structure for a preliminary check: volumetric weight = packed length × width × height × package count ÷ the carrier’s stated divisor. Record the divisor used, the unit system, and whether the quote applies a minimum chargeable weight. Ask the forwarder to confirm the final rule before booking.

For FCL, a per-container charge normally replaces a volume-based LCL calculation. For LCL, the forwarder may use CBM, weight, a minimum charge, or a combination of rules. The quote must state which basis applies.

What changes the final freight cost?

A calculator can organize inputs; it cannot know a live carrier rate or destination charge. Separate the cost drivers before comparing offers.

  • Origin and destination: factory pickup, warehouse delivery, port pair, terminal, and final address change the route.
  • Mode and equipment: air, LCL, FCL, rail, road, and express services use different charging and handling rules.
  • Cargo profile: weight, volume, stackability, batteries, liquids, oversized pieces, and other restrictions can change eligibility and handling.
  • Timing: booking date, season, blank sailings, capacity, and requested delivery window affect the available service and quote validity.
  • Scope: pickup, export documentation, origin handling, international freight, customs, duties/taxes, destination handling, insurance, and last-mile delivery must be listed separately.

Do not compare unexplained “all-in” numbers

A low headline number can exclude pickup, customs, destination handling, duties, taxes, or delivery. Ask for the included and excluded line items before choosing a carrier or forwarder.

Quote-ready shipment inputs

Send one complete brief rather than a product link alone. Googol Traders uses the following inputs to compare a suitable route and return a current quote.

Category Provide
Route Factory or pickup city, destination city/country, and delivery address if known
Cargo Product description, SKU, material, restricted or dangerous status, and intended use
Packing Carton/pallet count, packed dimensions, gross weight, and stackability
Commercial terms EXW, FOB, DDP, or another agreed Incoterm; goods value and documents available
Service Air, sea LCL/FCL, rail, road, inspection, warehousing, FBA prep, or delivery needs
Timing Cargo-ready date, target delivery window, and flexibility

How to turn the estimate into a bookable quote

  1. Confirm the packed cargo data with the supplier or warehouse.
  2. Calculate CBM and flag any mismatch between the packing list and measured cartons.
  3. Ask for the carrier/service basis, quote validity, inclusions, exclusions, and destination charges.
  4. Confirm customs responsibility, importer details, product documents, and any inspection or FBA requirements.
  5. Compare the complete scope, not only the freight line, then approve the booking brief.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate an exact container shipping price online?

No. You can calculate volume and organize the shipment inputs online, but an exact price requires current route, carrier, cargo, scope, and booking information.

What is the difference between CBM and chargeable weight?

CBM measures cargo volume in cubic metres. Chargeable weight is a carrier billing measure, commonly comparing actual and volumetric weight for air services. They answer different questions.

What should I send for a freight quote?

Send origin, destination, cargo description, package count, packed dimensions, gross weight, mode preference, Incoterm, restricted-goods status, required timing, and the services you want included.
